Module Additional Assessment Details
The portfolio should be equivalent to 2,000 words with appendices (not included in the word count). The appendices to consists of a summary of a semi-structured interview and life history sheets compiled from (a) the semi-structured interview (b) the census enumeration books for three consecutive censuses and (c) parish registers and/or the IGI (international genealogical index).
Module Indicative Content
This module introduces students to the study of family history and genealogical approaches to the family. In particular it aims to equip students with the skills and competencies necessary to research a family tree and produce a pedigree chart. In addition the module will: (a) look at why the study of family history is important to historians and the wider academic community; (b) the major sources used by family historians and the pitfalls involved in using them; (c) examine the relationship between the 'genealogical' and the 'demographic' approaches to the family.
Module Learning Strategies
Ten two-hour weekly workshops in the Sociology Laboratory.
To learn the skills necessary to construct a family tree students will learn how to undertake a life-history interview, read and analyse relevant manuscript sources (including the census enumerators' books, parish registers, trades directories and probate records)
