Module Learning Strategies
Key Iinformat Set:
10% scheduled activities, 90% independent guided study

The 10% scheduled activities to consist of: -
Nine one-hour lectures in a lecture room/IT laboratory with a projector
Nine one-hour workshops in an IT laboratory with computers for students to work upon set tasks and exercises
One two-hour revision session

The 90% independent guided study to consist of: -
Guided reading
Internet and secondary research on pre-set exercises
A life-history interview with an elderly relative
Preparation for scheduled sessions
Completion of assessment tasks

Formative feedback will be given to students in workshops.

Details of the pre-set tasks and exercises will be available for students on Blackboard.
Module Indicative Content
This module introduces students to the major sources used by academics, family historians and genealogists to study the history of the family. In particular, it aims to equip students with the skills and competencies necessary to research a family tree and produce a pedigree chart. In addition, the module will look at why the study of family history is important to historians and will examine ethical issues in the study of family history.

Amongst the sources which will be studied are: -
The life-history interview
Newspapers
Vital registration
The census enumerators' books
Parish registers
Internet sources (such as ancestry.com, Facebook, British Commonwealth Graves Commission, etc.)
Military records.

A session will also be included on career opportunities in family history research.


Module Additional Assessment Details
A portfolio equivalent to 2,500 words with two submission dates weighted at 100%. [Learning Outcomes 1-4]
The portfolio to consist of materials generated from various independent study tasks set to students on a week-by-week basis.
The portfolio will be marked in two stages.
