2,500 word assignment based on the exploration of sociological data.
Module Indicative Content
This module enables you to examine the development of modern health services from the New Poor Law, informed by sociological perspectives and examine whether this constitutes a transformation or continuity.
The sociology of the professions will be studied.
We will analyse whether sociological perspectives on bureaucracy and planning shed any light on recent developments in the NHS.
The critique of contemporary medicine will by analysed with reference to sociological texts.
The impact of medical technology will be assessed with reference to sociological and historical studies.
The pattern of class, gender and ethnic inequalities in health will be elucidated and discussed.
The distinction between genetics and eugenics will be analysed as well as the impact of such debates on the disability rights movement.
The recent changes in health policy will be studied along with their likely impact.
Module Learning Strategies
Students will have weekly whole group lectures and part group seminars. Seminars will support learning by giving students the opportunity to discuss concepts raised in lectures in more detail. Students will also be able, through discussion, support the development of study and other key skills. Time will also be given to supporting students to complete their assignment by encouraging them to seek individual tutorial guidance.

Module Resources
The library, module handbook, appropriate texts and computing facilities including the internet and e-mail. Rooms will also be suitable for disabled students and be equipped with video playback facilities.
