Module Indicative Content
You will examine the contribution made by feminist and woman centred approaches to counselling in helping female victims of violent crime to become survivors. The focus will be on women?s and girl?s experience of sexual abuse, rape and domestic violence. You will examine the various counselling strategies employed by woman centred counsellors in their therapeutic work with women together with an exploration of the role of selected counselling organisations. Feminist contributions to counselling theory and practice will be examined critically in the context of complementary and competing counselling models. As a necessary part of these studies the efficacy of woman-centred counselling in enabling survivors of violent crime to become `thrivers? will be the focus of critical scrutiny.
Module Learning Strategies
For 150 hours, of which 20 will be full class contact and 130 hours will be guided independent learning. Whole group contact will consist of weekly 2 hour workshops involving a combination of semi formal lectures, group work and exercises involving selected cases studies and discussions. Independent learning will consist of preparation for classroom based sessions, following up of issues and preparation of assessment.
