Indicative Content
This module offers the opportunity to experience the professional world of work in a public, voluntary or community organisation or a registered charity. Particular
attention is aid to an a reciation of the ethical ractical technical and financial (resource) issues involved In working with and for these sectors in the audit-driven culture of the twenty-first century. Students will typically be working with professional staff in the support of customers who experience some form of social disadvantage and require support. Alternatively, students might be required to contribute towards or conduct a small-scale research/evaluation project for the organisation.
Learning Strategies
These Learning Strategies will occupy your time:
3x1 hour LECTURES at the beginning of the placement MODULE exploring sociological theory in the workplace.
50 hours spent in the workplace over a 10 week period and negotiated with the 'employer' on an individual basis
1x1 hour meeting with tutor to discuss your placement
6x1 (or equivalent) hour sessions to take part in assessed presentations
Your independent study hours will comprise of a mixture of 50 hours in a placement setting and 90 hours of reading and research to prepare for your assessment.
Blackboard will provide supportive information and guidance to this module and enable a space for students to Blog about their experience as part of their independent study time.

The module leader has the right to refuse students onto this module if they have a poor attendance and engagement.
Students can't do this module if they have already done the L5 version of this module SOCY50400
Module Additional Assessment Details
• Passing 1 x Microsoft exam (PowerPoint) (covering learning outcome 1) at 30%
• 15 min Presentation (covering learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5) at 60%
• Passing a 50 hours Placement (covering learning outcome 2 & 5) at 10%
All assessment components need to be passed to obtain and overall pass for the module.
Your Presentation must contain:
1. Details of the placement organisation and the work task(s) that you were assigned
2. Reflections on the work environment/challenges and your personal/professional learning from the placement experience
3. Reflections in the skills you have gained and the feedback you obtained and how this might transfer to future employment
