Module Learning Strategies
300 hours, of which 12 will comprise on-line discussion groups.
The course will follow a series of weekly study units, each of which has a specific specialism and is overseen by an academic specialist. Learning will be accommodated through on-line discussion, reading and assimilation of on-line articles and mandatory readings, visuals etc, mini-lectures or seminars and student discussion groups.
Module Indicative Content
An overview of the range of research methods employed in the social and human sciences, quantitative, qualitative and experimental methods. Familiarisation with classical case studies of these methods. An introduction to the variety of quantitative techniques. Establishing a research problem, selecting a method, research design, handling, analysing and reporting findings. Sampling, multivariate analysis, triangulation, grounded theory, unobtrusive measures. Qualitative research methodology for field research. An introduction to the spectrum of qualitative research methods. The theoretical and epistemological foundations of qualitative research design. Ethnography, participant observation, life history, ethics, conversation analysis, feminism.
Module Additional Assessment Details
2 pieces of work, each of 3500 words or equivalent to comprise:
An essay based on a Research Method which will assess [45%- Learning Outcomes 1 or 2 & 3]
A second essay or exercise in quantiative data analysis which will assess [45%-Learning Outcomes 1 & 3]

Completing work tasks online and interacting with other students online concerning the tasks 10% [Learning Outcomes 1-3]
