Module Details
Module Indicative Content
1. This module provides learning opportunities for students to develop their professional and interpersonal communication skills. Students will be expected to achieve a sound knowledge of this area of work with an ability to communicate appropriately and a capacity to exercise some personal responsibility for their present and future professional learning and development.

SERVICE USER INVOLVEMENT

Service users will be involved in the simulated role play.

Specific Topics to be addressed on the module include:

1. Active listening, interviewing and communication
2. Skills to recognise and celebrate diversity
3. Working with families
4. Developing reflective practitioner skills
5. Strategies for coping with stress and handling violence and aggression
6. Simulated practice skills
7. Inter-professional skills
8. Recording skills
9. Essential Computer Applications
10. Introduction to group work skills
Module Learning Strategies
TOTAL LEARNING HOURS 300

1. Whole Group Sessions (24 x 2hrs = 48 hrs) will be based on an experiential learning strategy where students will be expected to actively participate in a range of learning opportunities, in pairs, small groups and as a whole group.

2. Study skills (24 x 2hrs = 48hrs) workshops in computer skills

3. Independent learning (204 hours) Students will be expected to undertake preparatory and background reading and prepare work for assessment. This will include opportunity to demonstrate their capacity to exercise some responsibility for their personal and professional development. Students will be expected to carry out library research, internet and media research and work placement observation. Appropriate use should be made of professional practice personnel as a resource for learning. Students should make entries in their working journal and. professional development portfolio based on their observation and reflections of practice.

4. Practice based learning This will involve the observation and interaction with professionals and service users, interviews,, reflective practice and applying learning to own practice.

Formative

Observation of role plays and experiential exercises and the subsequent discussion of skills used and learning. Ongoing assessment of weekly journals.

Summative

Observation of discussion and analysis of an interview -This will assess learning outcome 1. 25%
