This module provides an introduction to Study and research Skills. It seeks to provide students with an
- Understanding of Study skills and the required academic conventions
- Awareness of Quantitative and qualitative research methods
- Ability to locate and utilise information from academic sources in relation to Social Work study and practice.
Module Additional Assessment Details
A rewording of the formative assignment below, in light of feedback advice plus a reflective account detailing the changes made and how this has informed future practice in regard to constructing essays (reflective account no more than 400 words) addressing all LO's
Formative Assessment / feedback:
an essay of 1200 words relating to Social Work which demonstrates a range of academic skills, including writing in an academic style, using sources to evidence argument and including correct citations and bibliography.

Module Learning Strategies
Scheduled Learning and Teaching Activities: (36 hours)
Study Skills Workshops (12x2hrs)
Developing academic skills including identifying, locating and analysing topic related literature
Research Skills Workshops (6x2hrs)
Developing and practising research skills including locating information from the internet, using SPSS and reading tables.
Guided Independent study: (114 hours)
This will include locating sources on the internet and practicing IT and paper based activities.
Some materials will be accessed through Blackboard / VLE
Module Resources
Computing facilities will be needed to access materials on the web and specialist online databases.
An e-mail account
Microsoft Office, SPSS
Access to appropriate texts and journals.
