1 x 5 talking head video focused on one element of human rights or equality legislation evidencing learning outcome 1.
1 x 30-minute examination (covering adults, children's and mental health law)

All assessment elements must be passed at a grade of 40 or above to successfully complete the module.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module will introduce you to the historical, policy and legal context of social work practice. You will learn how the laws are formed and about the connections between politics, serious case reviews and social work practice. You will also be introduced to the legislative framework that underpins practice across the three core social work disciplines and the law that upholds and promotes human rights and equality.
There will be a focus on 5 key pieces of legislation and the social policy that works alongside them:
Human Rights Act (1998)
Equality Act (2010)
The Children Act (1989)
Care Act (2014)
Mental Capacity Act (2015)
Mental Health Act (1983)

Legislation is the foundation for social work practice. It is critical that social workers understand the way in which the contemporary social, political and legal context underpins practice, and how these have evolved over time. The Foundations of Law module will provide you with an introduction to these central issues and to the key legislation governing social work practice in a range of contexts.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Scheduled teaching and learning activities: 39 hours
