Module Special Admissions Requirements
The module is open to students who have successfully progressed from Level 1 of the BA Social Work.
Module Additional Assessment Details
An ASSIGMT length 2500 WORDS weighted at 70%. A GP PRESENTAT weighted at 30%.
The assessment for this module will comprise of 2 elements of coursework:
Element 1 will be a group presentation focussing on area of Children and Young Peoples Social Work Policy and its relevance to practice. The weighting for this will be 30% of the overall mark of the module
This element meets Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, and 4
Element 2 will be an individual piece of written coursework of 2000 words in length. The assignment will focus on the role of assessment in Children and Young Peoples Social Work. This will account for 70% of the overall mark of the module
This element meets Learning Outcomes 3, 4, and 5
Students must pass both elements of the coursework to complete the module.
Opportunities for Formative Assessment will be through the discussion forum and tutorials
Module Indicative Content
This module provides an introduction to a range of issues relating to social work practice with vulnerable children, young people and their families. It seeks to provide students with a knowledge and unerstanding of:
- Relationship between the legislative framework and social work practice to promote and safeguard children
- Definitions of Abuse, Theories of abuse and protection, including an understanding of perpetrators of abuse.
- The impact of Domestic violence on Children and Young People, heir families and carers
- The Needs of Children who are looked after, disabled children, asylum seeking children, the adoption process and those Children who are at risk of social exclusion or known to the criminal justice services.
- Children and Young People who are experiencing Mental Health and Wellbeing issues.
- The role of prevention and family support services in promoting the 5 outcomes for Children, Young People (Be healthy, Stay safe, Enjoy and achieve, Make a positive contribution and Achieve economic well-being).
The role of Multi-Agency Working and multi-disciplinary approaches will be reflected and embedded within the module enabling students to understand the role of social work practice and the contribution it makes to safeguarding and protecting children. The teaching and learning strategies will also focus on the Rights of children both from a UK and United Nations Convention critically examining them and locating them within effective social work practice.
Critical engagement with the agenda for working with and safeguarding Children and Young People who have been trafficked, or who have experiened/witnessed atrocities through war and political unrest in their country of origin who are resident in the United Kingdom.
Module Team will be drawing on examples of practice in Children and Young People's Social Services from both a European and International perspective.
The National Occupational Standards for Social Work Key Roles 1-6, Working together to Safeguary Children (DH) 2006, common core Standards National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services will be key social policy and government guidance documents that inform the module.
Working with Children, Young People their Families and Carers within a framework that is anti-oppressive and which values diversity; personal, cultural religious and spiritual needs.
Module Learning Strategies
Whole group sessions (11 x 5hrs = 55 hours)
A series of lectures will disseminate knowledge and understanding of the key themes of the module.
Small group sessions (5 x 2hrs = 10 hours)
A series of small group sessions/seminars will provide opportunities to relate knowledge and understanding to specific areas. A variety of teaching methods will be used including group exercises, student presentations and role play.
Some materials will be accessed through Blackboard / VLE.
Directed study and independent learning (235 hours)
Including preparation for small group exercises and student debate. Preparation for the assignment through guided reading and research using the library, internet and current news media coverage.
Module Resources
Computing facilities will be needed to access materials on the web and specialist online databases.
Access to appropriate texts and journals.
