Module Indicative Content
Evidence-based social care practice means underpinning specialist knowledge, skills and decision-making with contemporary research evidence while ensuring people and communities are safeguarded and supported in their choices and aspirations.

This module will introduce research methodologies and data collection methods and you will discover how to interpret and present data and critically appraise research in terms of integrity, validity and reliability. There will be a strong emphasis on the principles of ethical research and you will be introduced to relevant professional codes of practice and the Staffordshire University academic regulations relevant to ethical considerations. You will also consider the relationship between evidence-based practice, quality and service improvement.
Module Additional Assessment Details
Summative
Literature review (2,000 words, 70%) Learning Outcomes 1-2
Carry out a literature review on a topic related to adult social care. Your literature review should demonstrate your ability to distinguish between a range of quantitative and qualitative methods of enquiry and appraise the appropriateness of their application to practice. You should also evaluate the utility, validity, reliability and rigour of research evidence in relation to adult social care.

Group presentation (20min, 30%) Learning Outcomes 3
You will prepare and deliver a 20min group presentation (to include time for questions), analysing the need for appropriate evidence-based practice in adult social care. Your presentation should be based on an identified example of research evidence and you should consider the extent to which quality and service improvement are dependent on evidence-based practice. You will need to submit an individual reflective account of your contribution to the group presentation (500 words).

Both summative elements must be passed in order to pass the module

Formative
Formative feedback will be given during class discussions, individual and/or group tutorials and seminars.
