Module Indicative Content
This module will consider the nature of care as an ethical activity. Ethical issues in adult social care will be identified and debated. The individual service user-practitioner relationship will be assessed with reference to appropriate boundaries and behaviour, power relations and the potential for abuse in professional settings. The module will investigate the legal, ethical and professional frameworks governing care for vulnerable people, including older persons, those with learning disabilities, physical or mental conditions, and including those relating to domestic abuse. Processes and procedures for managing risk and vulnerability will be analysed. Confidentiality, empathy and respect and the role of team work in care as a support for good practice and ethical behaviour will be examined.

Module Additional Assessment Details
Summative
Group debate (PASS/FAIL)
Compulsory participation in structured debate centred on contemporary ethical issues related to adult social care. Students will prepare and present a debate in small groups.

Written assignment (2,000 words) Learning Outcomes 1-3
Students will be required to submit supporting evidence for their debate participation. This must demonstrate their ability to critically analyse care as an ethical activity and their critical awareness of the service user-practitioner relationship. It must also demonstrate how legal and professional frameworks are applied to adult social care practice. The supporting evidence must be academically referenced using the Harvard system.

Both summative elements must be passed in order to pass the module.

Formative
Class discussion and debate will provide opportunities for peer and tutor feedback to guide developing knowledge and understanding and analysis of key theoretical concepts. Students will also receive formative feedback from their tutor on assignment plans during group and individual tutorials.
