Module Indicative Content
In this module you will be expected to identify an area of practice encountered in the therapy setting during your placement in the college/university clinic.
With the therapy mentor you will identify a problem area for researching the evidence base.
You will explore the following issues around the nature of research and its role developing an evidence base for Complementary Therapies:
The nature of research as part of the professional approach to care
The nature of quantitative and qualitative research methodology.
Critical appraisal skills for the assessment of the quality of the research literature
The debate over the nature of the evidence base in complementary therapy
Exploring the evidence base through the use of search strategies and techniques
The nature of desk-based and empirical research.
You will engage in a literature search and review on the subject.
You will explore the possible treatment patterns associated with the specific therapy and make recommendations for practice.
Module Learning Strategies
Emphasis will be placed on the practice setting. Independent study will be engaged in identifying the relevant literature to support knowledge and understanding of current theories of practice. Tutorial support will be provided for the development of the project.
Contact hours: 60% group tutorials, 20% individual tutorials, 20% preparation and oral presentation of findings
Independent study 100% research study
Module Additional Assessment Details
A literature search and critical review on a chosen therapy problem and a critical appraisal of the research methods used in the literature.
80% 4,000 words (Learning outcomes 1-5) and 20% oral presentation of findings (Learning outcomes 4-5)
