Module Learning Strategies
Scheduled Learning and Teaching Activities: (48 hours)
36 hours - Whole group sessions - A series of lectures will introduce and explore the key themes of the module
12 hours - A variety of teaching methods will be used including group exercises, student presentations and role play
Guided Independent Study: (252 hours)
Including preparation for assignment tasks and guided reading and research using the library, internet and current news media coverage
Some learning materials will be accessed through Blackboard / VLE
Module Indicative Content
This module provides you with an introduction to a range of issues relating to social work practice with vulnerable children, young people and their families. It seeks to provide students with knowledge and critical understanding of:
- The needs of children and young people within families and the tasks involved in parenting / caring
- The relationship between legislation, policy and social work practice to promote and safeguard the wellbeing of children
- Concepts such as Wellbeing, Resilience, Vulnerability and Risk in relation to social work practice with Children and Families.
- The impact of Violence and Abuse within families.
- The Social and Developmental aspects of Behavioural and Parenting problems for children and families
- Professional Assessment and Intervention with children, young people and families.
- Social Care and multi-agency Support for families
- Social Care provision for children and young people who are unable to live within their own families
- The links between childhood trauma and adult Mental Health and between adult mental health and Parenting and Caring
- Multi-agency working and multi-disciplinary approaches to Safeguarding.
The teaching and learning strategies will also promote a Child Centred; Rights based approach to work with Children and Families and seek to contextualise professional practice, policy and UK legislation in relation to International (United Nations) Conventions.
An international perspective on practice will be further developed through considering the needs of Children and Young people who seek sanctuary in the UK or who have been trafficked across borders.
The teaching and learning strategies will also encourage and facilitate critical thinking and research mindedness and promote an anti-oppressive approach to social work practice which values and celebrates diversity and respects individuals' personal, cultural and religious identities.
The module will build on the `Rights, Justice and Equality' module studied in year one of the award and will co-exist with `Working with and Safeguarding Adults at Risk'
Assessment Details
You will produce a group presentation (20 minutes duration weighted at 40% assessing all LO's) based on current policies and practices in working with children and young people and their families.
Written assignment (2000 words) weighted at 60% assessing LO's 1, 2 and 3)
Both elements of assessment must be passed
