Formative Assessment
During the module there will be an opportunity for group discussions around chosen theories and case studies.
Summative Assessment
Assessment One:
Students will be required to write an assignment to evidence their knowledge and application of theories in social work practice. The assignment will be based on a case study, with discussion of how theoretical perspectives influence social work practice. (2000 words, learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3, weighted at 80%).
Assessment Two:
Students will take part in a professional conversation with two academic members of staff, based on their written assignment with emphasis on communicating with other professionals. (20 minutes, assessing learning outcome 4, weighted at 20%)
Students must achieve a grade of 40% or above in both assessments to successfully pass the module.
Indicative Content
In this module you will begin to explore the relationship between human development throughout the lifespan and the social problems and difficulties faced by service users throughout their life. Psycho-social models and theories will be taught and related to the lifespan and development of individuals commencing with the issues around conception and pregnancy and culminating in theories of ageing and end of life issues.
The module will also explore developmental issues, these will include, physical, cognitive, emotional and social and the factors that may influence these developments such as physical and emotional trauma, attachment issues and health as well as looking at the sociological perspectives of a changing society with multi-dimensional diversity- reflecting on year one modules.
You will investigate the theories of disability and how a range of physical, mental, sensory impairments and learning difficulties impact on the lives of individuals and the way society views, values and supports these individuals.
Finally you will relate the marginalisation of some service users to their development and the barriers to communication that may exist and you will seek to overcome these, and to ensure that you gain an understanding of adverse environments and how these can impact on assessment of needs and the planning of interventions.

This module provides innovative teaching approaches to enable tangible learning of theoretical perspectives. You will engage with peers, professionals, service users and carers to consider the impact of theories and approaches on interventions. Taking a lifespan approach to learning, you will consider how experiences influence individual and systemic thinking for service users, social workers and other professionals.
Learning Strategies
Scheduled Learning and Teaching activities (78 hours)
To include:
Blended learning within a classroom setting (with academics, service users and carers, and practitioners) and teaching and learning accessed online (eg Webinars, online discussions etc). Some of the learning will be flipped learning with a requirement for you to read materials ahead of a session where we will discuss findings in a group setting.
Independent Study (322 hours)

Pre-recorded webinars and reading materials for you to access within your 20% off-the-job training, designed to help direct you in your learning of this module.
Guided Independent Study (262):
Preparation for the scheduled learning sessions and individual preparation for the role play activities and written reflective assignment.
A range of materials will be made available to you and accessed through Blackboard/VLE.
There will be the opportunity for you to take part in a debate in class, and there will be an opportunity for you to discuss theoretical perspectives with students studying Level 5 Social work via an alternative route (eg BA (hons) undergraduate).

Computer and Library facilities are available to all students enrolled at Staffordshire University, including those on apprenticeship courses.
Special Admissions Requirements
This module is open only to those enrolled on the BA (hons) Social Work Integrated Degree Apprenticeship.
