Module Learning Strategies
Teacher/Student Contact Hours: Students will engage in interactive learning and teaching strategies including interactive lectures (50%) together with small group work, group discussion and seminar presentations (50%)

Independent Learning:
Reflection on the observation and assessment of children within the area of practice (30%). Exploring assessment models and theories of child and adolescent development and preparation for assessment (60%). Access to learning materials and discussion group on Blackboard (10%)
Module Indicative Content
The module aims to equip qualified practitioners working with children, young people, their families with the ability to identify and critically engage with core life span development theories that promote growth and development and contribute to effective outcomes. The module will also focus on the role of resilience and attachment and the child in context. This will include:

1. Developmental needs of children and young people, and children with disabilities
2. Understanding and engaging with the impact of abuse, domestic violence and family violence, trauma on children and young people; and the influence these factors have on outcomes. Role of race, culture and religion and the links with positive identity.
3. The validity of a variety of assessments and intervention methods will be explored

The module will also enable students to identify and critically analyse contemporary assessment theories and models for intervention and the role they have in promoting the holistic needs of children, young people their families and carers. The role of the practitioner in empowering children, young people, their families and carers and risk management and its application to vulnerable children will be discussed.

Additional Assessment Details:

A case study based upon an observation and assessment of a child or young person in the context of the learners specialist practice. The case study will include a discussion of relevant lifespan theory underpinning the interventions taken and a justification of the assessment model and methods utilised. A reflection upon the social workers practice will be included. The observation and assessment of the child or young person will be included as an appendix to the case study.
