Module Indicative Content
Practice learning at level 6 will include a range of practice placement settings which include: statutory and voluntary agencies, hospital settings, prisons, fire stations, schools and police stations but the placement will afford you the opportunity to meet all of the Professional Capabilities Framework criteria for the second placement.

This period of practice learning will enable students to demonstrate a systematic understanding of key aspect of the social work role and functions, including assessment, support planning and therapeutic interventions/direct work with service users and carers.

Supervisions with practice educators and work based supervisors will facilitate your understanding of the application of theories into practice and enhancement of your social work skills.

The safeguarding of vulnerable adults and children who may be at risk is central to the profession of social work. This includes preventative work, recognition and identification of abuse, risk assessment and management, investigation, decision-making. Students will therefore be expected to begin to demonstrate competence in these important practice areas.

Placement for last for 100 days.
Module Learning Strategies
Scheduled Learning and Teaching Activities: (154 hours)
30 hours - Whole Group Sessions
These will be focused into Learning Consolidation days, here key themes in social work practice will be espoused and learning from practice placements shared. There will be guidance on employability skills and prospective employers will be invited to take part in these sessions.

Directed reading
Working with team members at the placement
Reading and working with agency policies and procedures
Reflecting on own practice, by means of the assignment
Linking the learning from the university modules to the practice setting
Developing knowledge and understanding of a key issues for the placement setting and identifying applications for practice through working on the placement assignment
Observation and feedback on own practice
Completing agency documentation
Managing a caseload

Module Special Admissions Requirements
This module is open only to students enrolled on the BA (Hons) Social Work and have passed levels 4 and 5
Module Resources
A practice learning setting agreed by the university is able to provide the required learning experiences. Practice learning settings are arranged by the placement co-ordinator. Students do not make their own practice placement arrangements

A Practice Learning Educator agreed by the university and/or the partners involved in the delivery of the award

This module has two distinct elements:

- Practice: 100 day placement and production of a professional portfolio evidencing knowledge, theory and skills mapped into the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) and Knowledge and Skills Statements (KSS). Each student will have a Practice Educator and Academic Link who will support the student through the placement via formal and informal meetings and tutorials.

- Academic: Professional development and awareness through 4 taught days within the university to support the student's placement experience. There is an assessed presentation at the end of the placement based on a Critical Incident and a written submission to support the presentation.

Professional Practice Portfolio of evidence
This is a regulating body requirement and the portfolio will demonstrate and provide evidence of how you have met all of the Professional Capabilities Framework criteria for the `end of second placement', you must meet all of the competencies for the level (weighted at 0%) (assessing LO's 1 and 2)

Your portfolio must also include:
A completed and signed Learning Agreement
Learning Curriculum
A Mid Point Review of the Placement learning
3 successful direct observations of your practice
Placement assessment Report
Work Based supervisor's report

The portfolio is assessed as a pass/fail and you must pass this to achieve a pass grade for the module

An Individual Presentation (20 minutes duration weighted at 100% assessing LO's 3, 4 and 5)

Verbal presentation with a PowerPoint of an individually prepared analysis of a critical incident drawn from the student's second Practice learning Opportunity which details the theories, laws and skills used to deal with a complex and unpredictable situation and which shows reflection on practice and critically analysis of the situation with a problem solving approach to dealing effectively with the incident

Formative assessment;
Practice educators will provide on going feedback on the student's practice on their regular supervision sessions, and via the mid-point report. Suitability of critical incidents may be discussed in supervisions.
Students will be able to gain general feedback from tutors through individual tutorials with their personal tutors

Students who fail their Practice element will not automatically be given another second assessment opportunity. If such a situation does arise the outcome will be subject to a Second Opinion Assessment as an award specific regulation. Information on this procedure is available in the award handbook and on Blackboard.
