Module Special Admissions Requirements
Registered social worker with three years' relevant work experience and qualified for at least two years.
Prior experience of and competence in supporting professional learners, usually demonstrated by successful completion of "Enabling Others" or an equivalent module.
Demonstration of ability to study at Masters level either due to previous qualifications at degree level or assessment of further study materials.
Module Resources
Students must have access to a PC capable of running Windows XP, Internet Explorer or above, MicrosoftOffice (including PowerPoint) or compatible software, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Broadband connection. Speakers or headphones.
Module Learning Strategies
The module will be delivered via a combination of action learning sets and on-line materials including lectures, interviews and other customised exercises, video/ audio and e-book/ journal content. Candidates will join an action learning set with a University appointed facilitator who will support candidates to follow the programme of study and meet the assessment requirements.
The contact hours will be around 20
There will be one half day induction session of 3 hours
Action Learning sets will require a 14 hours
There will be at least one direct observation with feedback which will require a further 3 hours
280 hours will be non-contact study and working directly with social work students
Students will access on-line learning materials which they can organise within their own time or in negotiation with their employer. Further supervision and discussion takes place with a Practice Assessor (who undertakes the direct observation) who may also be their line manger. This is ongoing supervision which lies outside of contact hours. Line management supervision over 4-6 months is dependent on the length of the placement (The L M may be the Practice Assessor) will support this process, but this is not counted as contact time with the university
Module Indicative Content
On-line materials (lectures, powerpoint presentations etc) using audio and video technology, both as pre-recorded material and their use as teaching tools which contain:
- Application of IT/online techniques for practice education.
- Theoretical and evidence-based approaches to learning and assessment relevant to the professional context of the learner.
- Models and methods of supervision for the purpose of professional education, including concepts of mentoring and coaching.
- Video discussion of values, power and authority in practice education.
- Demonstration of use of assessment of learners in practice: principles and processes of assessment, use of evidence, quality of reports and recommendations, issues of marginality and learners not demonstrating competence.
- On-line methods of quality assurance of educational opportunities.
- Strategies for continuing professional development and updating.
Module Additional Assessment Details
The intended learning outcomes will be assessed as follows:
Assessment will be by a portfolio of material for both levels. This will contain, for example, a curriculum or planned programme of learning (including induction programme where appropriate) for one or more learners. -1000 words (LO 2)
A report of an observation of the candidate enabling the learning and critical reflection of one or more learners (LO1), using relevant contemporary models methods and theories (LO 3). The observation may be direct or recorded using video or e-learning technology (candidate to choose) (LO 4) alongside a self-evaluation of the direct observation.
A written analysis of a scenario of a learner who is marginal or failing incorporating analysis, decision-making and the use of a range of assessment methods -2000 words (LO 5).
A critical reflective evaluation of current and continuing performance as a practice educator incorporating application of values and knowledge of learning theory and research evidence relevant to their experience and context-3000 words (LO 1, 3, 4).
A completed QAPL audit (LO 2) (if appropriate)
Assessment must include one direct observation or two if candidate cannot produce verifiable evidence of a previous successful observation in a Practice Educator role.
Additional Assessment Details (include formative feedback / assessment):
Students will receive feedback after each submitted piece of work which takes place through an going timeline after the initial enrolment and Action Learning Sets. They will therefore receive formative feedback as an ongoing process.
