LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure, policies and issues of sport in great britain and other countries including an appreciation of modern sport with reference to technology, commercialism and globalisation. (Knowledge and Understanding, Reflection)
2. Be able to discuss the sociological issues in sport (including gender, deviance and racism) and the impact that these have on sports participation. (Communication, Learning)
3. Be able to explain the training and organisational support available to elite athletes / performers in a chosen sport in the uk and from a comparative nation. (Enquiry, Knowledge and Understanding)
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
This module has two assessments:
The first assessment is an extended written report of a maximum 1500 words that compares history and current policy and practice in a comparative nation; this examines LO's 1 and 3 (50%)
The second assessment will be a 1 hour unseen examination that will cover the influences on global sport; this will consist of short answer questions that will cover LO's 1, 2 and 3 (50%)
Both elements of assessment must be passed
Additional Assessment Details (include formative feedback / assessment):
A 1 hour seen examination that covers the development of sport in the UK.
Formative feedback on knowledge and understanding will be a regular feature of classroom sessions, including short formative tests.
PLEASE NOTE ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENTS FOR SEMESTER 1/2 2020/21 DUE TO COVID-19 AS FOLLOWS:
Essay - 1500 words (50%)
REPORT - 50%
INDICATIVE CONTENT
Include all relevant content as referred to in the learning outcomes and assessment.
The module will include aspects of developmental social and cultural viewpoints.
Within the development area, the growth of sport and recreation within the UK will be studied, that will begin with the historical elements of sport. Globalization and international issues within other cultures will be then analysed to provide a link between sport in the UK and other countries. Within the final part of the module modern day sociological issues such as deviance in sport, commercial aspects and the media will be taught.

Learning Strategies
This module contains a combination of face to face and blended learning. Lectures and seminars will be interactive and require full participation. Some seminars will be student led and facilitated by the lecturer.Independent study tasks will be set but further idependant study will be required. This may include reading around module topics, discussion based activities or investigating current theory and practice associated wth the module. Student led independant study will be required specifcally for assessment preparation.
