Module Learning Outcome
1. Demonstrate knowledge of a range of skills required for effective learning, including how to manage time effectively; awareness of different learning styles, how to behave professionally in Sport, Health and Exercise, use of library learning resources to identify suitable information sources and understand and use effective note-taking in range of contexts.

A LEARNING PORTFOLIO weighted at 40%.

Module Learning Strategies
24 hours of lectures covering areas 1 to 4 identified above.
36 hours of multi-activity workshops, with emphasis on the practical application of the lecture programme via individual and group based tasks, with an additional 48 hours of independent study to complete set tasks and activities.
92 hours of VLE based learning activity in developing learning journal / portfolio.
100 hours of preparatory or follow-up reading.
Module Indicative Content
1. Effective Learning Skills
Time management, different learning styles, effective note-taking, behaving professionally in Sport, Health & Exercise
settings; use of library and learning resources to identify suitable information sources. Obtaining information electronically; how to compare and evaluate information from a variety of sources. Preparing for and learning from assessment.
2. Communication Skills
Written Communication: Preparing, writing and presenting an essay including referencing and citing of information; writing for different purposes.
Reading & Verbal Skills: Asking effective questions in class and group discussions; recognising and constructing an argument taking in to account others views; selecting, analysing and comparing a range of print based information.
3 Information Technology Skills
The use of a windows environment to manipulate information and communicate ideas via word processing, speadsheets and e-mail. Accessing the WWW including locating, selecting and evaluating internet information.
4. Numeracy and Statistical Skills
Basic research methodology in Sport, Health & Exercise including both qualitative and quantitative approaches to research design. Handling data - Interpreting and representing data in a number of ways. Basic statistical procedures and packages. Introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics. The measurement of association and tests of differences.
Module Additional Assessment Details
Students will be required to complete 3 pieces of summative assessment.
1. The first will involve a learning portfolio (2000 words) which will assess LO1 and LO2. Distinct sections of the learning portfolio, will be submitted at different times throughout the module.
2. The second piece will be a class test (40 minutes) designed to assess LO3.
3. The third piece of assessment will be a 90 minute open book exam designed to assess LO4.
Students will be provided with formative assessment and feedback via a series of weekly based tasks delivered both in workshops, and through a virtual learning environment. These tasks will form the basis of a learning journal / portfolio (assessment 1) an also prepare students for both class tests (assessments 2 and 3)
