Module Resources
Variety of sports equipment. Fitness testing equipment. A suitable location for the delivery of sports coaching sessions. Access to an appropriately specified PC, with accompanying Word, PowerPoint, Adobe and Java software.
Module Learning Strategies
Learners will follow a thirty week guided programme of study.
Direct contact: 90 Hours over 30 weeks. It is envisaged that 2 hours per week be dedicated to practical and 1 hour per week to the theoretical requirements of the module.
Independent Study Hours: 210 Hours. During this time students will compile the evidence for the 3 assessments, spend time observing and working with other coaches and conducting research on relevant coaching topic areas to further their knowledge of best practice.
Module Indicative Content
- Students will begin by learning about the context of coaching in modern day sport. This will include discussion of professional values, the role of a coach in a number of settings as well as consideration of the various policies and procedures that coaches need to be aware of.
- Learners will then design and use a variety of assessment methods to analyse the strengths, weaknesses and areas to improve of two contrasting athletes. These assessment methods will be evaluated based on their success.
- Each learner will also be required to deliver a range of coaching sessions throughout the module to demonstrate the ability to coach 1-2-1 and with groups of athletes in at least two contrasting sports.
- Finally, all learners will be asked to present their thoughts on the developments made over the module by their two contrasting athletes and to self-evaluate their progress made as coaches.
Module Additional Assessment Details
All assessment elements of the module must be passed.
Students will be required to complete 3 pieces of summative assessment.
(1) To produce a portfolio of evidence on:
- The various relevant influences on coaching in the modern day sporting environment.
- The various assessment methods designed and used, including details on their origin, design and practicality.
- A pair of summaries based on the strengths, weaknesses and areas to improve of the two contrasting athletes.
- Comments based on the success of the whole range of the assessment methods.
The assessment will be on a 1500 word summary of the key aspects on the portfolio to meet LO1 & LO2. This is worth 40% of the module grade.
(2) To plan and deliver a number of sessions over the course of the module, 2 of which will be formally assessed. Sessions plans and evaluations must be submitted. Some of the sessions will be 1-2-1 based working with the two contrasting athletes from LO2. Some sessions will be group based sessions involving the two contrasting sports. This is worth 40% of the module grade and assesses LO3. Subject lecturer shall provide a formal summative observation of the 2 formally assessed coaching sessions.
(3) To deliver an oral presentation (Maximum ten minutes) on the evaluations of the player's development during the module. The presentation should contain quantitative statistics in terms of the progressions shown by the athletes. The learner should also link to evidence generated in assessments 2 & 3 (LO2 / LO3). Attendance at this event is compulsory. This is worth 20% of the module grade and assesses LO4.
Students will receive formative feedback throughout the module comprising a combination of task related feedback.
Staff shall also be available for consultation with learners regarding assignment drafts, planning of coaching sessions & may provide seminars for further support.
