Indicative Content
This module serves to provide an introduction to the fundamental aspects of sports science and how various disciplines interact with each other to provide a holistic approach to athletic preparation

Areas to be explored include: the roles of the physiologist, biomechanist and psychologist Basic fundamental knowledge of sport and exercise will be covered, as they apply in the scientific testing and monitoring of sports performance and the preparation of training plans both in standard and extreme environments.

The module will cover aspects of laboratory and field testing of sports performance, the role of the sports scientist in individual and team sports, the importance of calibration, accuracy, reliability and specificity of testing. How to use scientific testing results to support the sportsperson in developing and improving their performance will be discussed. Both two dimensional and three dimensional motion analysis and data capture will be covered. Communication of results to performers will be considered.
Assessment Details
A 90-minute unseen exam including multiple choice, short answer and essay type questions covering all areas of the module. This is worth 100% of the module grade and will assess learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 & 4

Additional Assessment Details (include formative feedback / assessment)

Formative feedback on knowledge and understanding will be a regular feature of workshop sessions where field and laboratory testing will be taking place. Supportive learning workshop tasks will be published on blackboard and will form part of the independent study tasks.

Learning Strategies
Lectures - 13 x 1 hour  Labs - 13 x 2 hours   A large proportion of this module involves practical work. Students will be expected to select appropriate physical tests and administer these tests according to set protocols. Also, to able to provide a basic interpretation of the results.   Specify the number of Guided Independent Study Hours attributed to each type of activity (eg reading / assessment preparation).  Total hours should equate to Guided Independent Study Hours identified on page 1 of this form.  114 Independent Study Hours:  25 hours of reading to support lectures.  10 hours of literature searching and reading to support the laboratory and field testing.  25 hours preparation for formative assessment.  27 hours preparation for summative assignments  27 hours student led independent study...including internet searching and reading, library searching and reading plus observing sports scientists at sporting events (Match analysis, physiotherapists, sports therapists, psychologists etc.)   Total 150 hours
