Module Details
INDICATIVE CONTENT
The module aims to provide students with an introduction to independent coaching skills for those who wish to prepare themselves for further learning or training relating to coaching sport/physical education. It affords the opportunity for students to develop their knowledge and skills of coaching sport to individuals and groups, as well as plan and deliver the fundamental aspects of a coaching session, such as a warm-up and key features of games-based and skill-based coaching sessions.

Plan and prepare for coaching sessions.
Conduct coaching sessions under supervision, in a safe environment.
Promote good ethical practice associated with sports coaching.
Establish and build a rapport with participants whilst coaching.
Develop effective communication skills appropriate to coaching.
Review their own and others' coaching performance.
Assess inherent risks related to the environment.
Learn about safeguarding and keeping participants safe.

The audio-recording assessment will can be conducted on a range of devices/software, examples will be provided within the content surrounding the use of an audio-recorder on a Smartphone, specific apps. from iOS and Android app. stores (e.g. ‘Super Audio Recorder’), to simply using the microphone on a laptop and Microsoft’s preinstalled audio software.
ASSESSMENT DETAILS
You are required to produce an audio-recording which critically reviews a practical coaching session. This review should highlight ‘good practice’ in coaching, as well as the strengths of the coaching session and the coach’s areas for development. The audio-recording should be 12-15 minutes in duration and will assess LO’s 1 and 2.
It is important that you draw upon some literature throughout the audio-recording. Furthermore, you can use a range of technology to conduct the recording of your podcast, using SMART phones, apps., laptop’s (with mic.), online web-based software, etc.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
This module incorporates a tutor-lead lecture programme and practical sessions, however, student-lead coaching with the tutor facilitating will be a theme throughout the module. Students will be required to conduct tutor-directed independent study, as well as student-lead enquiry and reading into research around the sport coaching topics covered in the module. Students are highly encouraged to observe experienced coaches in a sport/range of sports and assist a coach where appropriate to further develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of sport coaching. Specific formative assessment, reading and preparatory tasks will need to be completed prior to the summative assessment.
