INDICATIVE CONTENT
Students will gain an understanding of a range of sport and exercise disciplines and how they directly impact upon the performance related goals of athletes and teams. Utilising a multi-disciplinary team is essential in modern coaching and this module will provide important contextualisation of appropriate testing, support and development that sport science can offer both sportspeople and their coaching team.
The module is broken down in to four components, Physiology, Psychology, Strength and Conditioning, and Biomechanics. Each of these key disciplines are recognised by the British Association for Sport and Exercise (BASES) and provide industry insight to enhance the employability of our students.
Students will get to operate a wide range of technology to explore a range of different metrics that coaches may utilise when making key decisions, ranging from team selection to talent identification.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
Reflective Vlog – Students will reflect on the content they have learnt in each of the four sub disciplines of sport and exercise science, relating the important information back to their own practice and career ambitions. Students should spend five minutes reflecting on each of the four disciplines covered. LO 1,2&3
LEARNING STRATEGES
This module utilises a blended approach to teaching. Lectures and practical’s will be interactive and require full participation. Some practical’s will be student led and facilitated by the lecturer. The practical elements to the course will provide unique opportunity to get hands on experience with some industry leading apparatus. Independent study tasks will be set but further independent study will be required. This may include reading around module topics, discussion based activities or investigating current theories associated with the module. Student led independent study will be required specifically for assessment preparation.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the sport and exercise field and show how this relates directly to sport coaching and teaching. Knowledge, Understanding
2. Explain the role of a multi=disciplinary team, within sports teams. Knowledge
3. Utilise literature to support the considered application of theory to practice. Evaluation, application
WEB DESCRIPTOR
A unique insight in to the world of sport and exercise science, students will study physiology, psychology, biomechanics and strength and conditioning as they look to understand the role multi-disciplinary sport science teams play. In the ever evolving world of sport, it is more important than ever for coaches and teachers to have optimal understanding of the metrics sport scientist can provide and how these epitomise and optimise performance levels.
