INDICATIVE CONTENT
The module aims to provide you with an introduction to the coaching and teaching process and the opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills in coaching and teaching groups and individuals across a range of sports, with both individual and invasion games covered. As part of this content, you will be introduced to basic techniques commonplace in sport alongside principles of play or tactics. Principles of effective planning, organising, reflecting and conducting coaching sessions will be covered and introduced in lectures and further developed in practical sessions. In addition, you will be introduced to risk management issues that affect coaches and coaching sessions.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
There are two pieces of summative assessment for this module, they are as follows:
1) You are required to conduct a short coaching practical which is 10-minutes in duration. The coaching session will be delivered to your peers and will assess LOs 1 and 2 of the module. This is a pass or fail assessment based on whether the student delivers their practical delivery or not.
2) After conducting your practical coaching session, you are required to complete a 1000-word written reflection of the session and your experience. This will assess LOs 1 and 3.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1) Demonstrate knowledge of the underlying concepts and principles associated with coaching and teaching sport.
2. Show an ability to plan, organise and effectively conduct a coaching practical.
3. Reflect on your own ability to plan and conduct a coaching practical.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
This module incorporates a tutor-lead lecture programme and practical sessions, however, at times student-lead sessions with the tutor facilitating will be utilised. Students will be required to conduct tutor-directed independent study, as well as student-lead enquiry and reading into research around sports and coaching topics covered in the module. Students will have to observe experienced coaches in sport of their choice and assist an experienced coach to further develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of sports coaching. Student-lead independent study will be required specifically for assessment preparation.

Appropriately and adequately equipped lecture theatre or suitably sized classroom.
Appropriately and adequately equipped facilities for the practical activity to be undertaken (typically AstroTurf pitch or sports hall).
Appropriately and adequately stocked library facilities.
Adequate supply of relevant video materials.
