Module Details
Module Indicative Content
This module provides students with the opportunity to develop personal communcation and presentation skills, and
to acquire the skills necessary to work effectively in a group (eg, team roles and responsibilities, effective decision making
in groups, working with others). It will also outline skills required for independent study (eg, deep and surface
approaches to learning) and introduce students to methods of critical analysis, reasoning and argumentation.
Potential careers in Sport, Health and Exercise will be outlined to help inform students' module choices at level 3.

The module will also develop the skills necessary for conducting research in Sport, Health and Exercise. These
include reviewing the research process (eg, what makes a good research question, accessing research literature), guidelines for writing a research report, quantitative statistics (eg, t-test, analysis of variance, non parametric statistics), qualitative approaches (eg, content analysis, ethnography, action research), and using appropriate software to analyse data and interpret output.
Module Learning Strategies
24 hours of lectures covering central content of the module.
24 hours of student-led workshops.
1 hour of meetings with research paper supervisor (group and individual)
51 hours of group based activity and preparing for the presentation
100 hours of independent study involving completion of statistical and data interpretation exercises
100 hours of preparatory work for end of module assignment.
Module Resources
Appropriately and adequately equipped lecture theatre
Appropriately and adequately equipped seminar / workshop space
Appropriately and adequately stocked library facilities.

Module Additional Assessment Details
Summative Assessment:
Students will be required to complete 2 pieces of summative assessment comprising of 3 elements.

1. Oral presentation and reflection on personal communication skills (worth 50% of the module mark). This will
comprise 2 parts. The first of which will be a 20 minute group oral presentation assessing LO 1 and be
worth 25% of the module mark. The second part of this will consist of an evaluation of their own presentation
and the effectiveness of the group assessing LO2 (1500 words) and be worth 25% of the module mark.

2. A 2000 word group and individually based research paper on a selected topic area. The group work will
comprise of sections of the report concerning abstract, introduction and review of a topic area relevant to
the study area of sport, health and exercise. The individual component will involve the interpretation,
presentation and discussion of data provided to the student by a project supervisor.
This will assess LOs 3, 4 and 5.

Students will be provided with formative assessment and feedback via a series of weekly based tasks delivered both in workshops, and through a virtual learning environment. Non-assessed presentations (2 minutes) will also occur prior to the assessed presentation. Guidance on a draft of the research paper will be given following meetings with subject specific staff.
