114 hours of student independent study. Students will be engaged in searching for primary Sports History material in local libraries, searching for WWW material, reading and preparation for assessments and seminars.
Module Indicative Content
The module will examine the nature of sports history and associated methodologies. Students will examine the place of sport in pre-industrial and industrialising societies. The growth of rational recreation will be analysed. Selected physical activities will be examined as case studies in terms of organisation and technical development. Students will assess the influence of education, local government, social class, gender and religion on sports development.
The relationship between the amateur ethic and the rebirth of the Olympic movement will be examined alongside the growth of professional sport in Britain.
Module Additional Assessment Details
Students will be summatively assessed by two pieces of work. A mid-module assignment of 1500 words will assess learning outcome 1 through the analysis of a journal article in the field of study. The second assessment will be completed by an end of module unseen examination of 60 minutes, assessing learning outcomes 2 & 3. Both pieces of assessment will carry 50% weighting.
Formative assessment will be via the workshop/seminar sessions where journal articles are analysed in group situations
