Module Indicative Content
This module will apply nutritional concepts to sport, health and exercise. Covering the relationships between diet and development of disease (such as coronary heart disease and obesity) and also exploring the relationship between diet and sports performance (such as training and dehydration). Guidelines for fluid, carbohydrate and protein intakes will be considered and appropriate applications to population groups discussed.
Methods of investigating nutritional status will be explored and critically analysed. Dietary intake information will be collected, presented and interpreted during laboratory sessions. The strengths and weaknesses of various approaches will be considered and evaluated. Appropriate research methodologies will be explored.
Module Additional Assessment Details
Students will be required to complete 3 pieces of summative assessment:
1. A group presentation (15 minutes) of diet analysis results, worth 10% of the overall module mark.
(assesses LOs 1,2 & 3)
2. A 1000 word report, worth 40% of the overall module mark. (Individually produced) (Assesses LOs 1,2 & 3)
3. A 1 hour unseen examination, worth 50% of the overall module mark. (Assesses LOs 1 & 3)
Additional Assessment Details (including formative feedback / assessment:
The group presentation of the diet analysis results provides the opportunity for peer support and tutor formative feedback before the individual written report is submitted.
Workshops and blackboard material are designed to support learning during the course of the module, but specifically towards the end and the unseen examination.
