Module Indicative Content
The module examines the nature of sports history and associated research methodologies. Students examine the place of sport in pre-industrial and industrialising societies as well as the growth of rational recreation. Selected physical activities will also be examined as case studies in terms of organisation and technical development. Students will assess the influence of education, local government, media, social class, gender and religion on sports development. The relationship between the amateur ethic and the rebirth of the Olympic movement will be examined alongside the growth of professional sport in Britain.
