Module Learning Strategies
Students will participate in a combination of lectures, laboratory sessions and independent learning activities designed to illustrate and explore the relevant concepts.

102 hours preparation for assignment 1 and 2 including the planning and completion of a 30min interview.
Module Indicative Content
This module considers using theoretical and empirical research, the efficacy of psychological strategies (e.g., imagery, self-talk and hypnosis) commonly used with sport and exercise participants. It also outlines issues relevant to the delivery (e.g., ethical concerns, adherence issues), and evaluation (e.g., assessing psychological states) of these strategies. In addition, students will consider basic counselling skills, practical research methods, interview techniques, reflective practice and BASES supervised experience.
Module Additional Assessment Details
This module contains 2 assessment points: one at the end of semester 1 and the other at the end of semester 2. Students will be required to complete 2 pieces of summative assessment:

End of semester 1
Portfolio 1:
A PORTFOLIO weighted at 50%.
Production of a 2500 word portfolio. This will comprise a critical discussion of a selected psychological strategy or issue surrounding the delivery and evaluation of behaviour change interventions. The portfolio will also require students to demonstrate an ability to communicate information about a selected psychological strategy to a sport or exercise population in a readable and accessible format.
It will also comprise a psychological skills training programme developed for a specific athlete, exerciser, sports team or exercise group.
This assessment will be worth 50% of the module mark and assess Learning Outcomes 1, 2 and 3.
Students will be prepared for this assessment by role play and formative assessment delivered during the workshop sessions. In addition, assessment guidance sessions will be provided.

End of semester 2
Portfolio 2:
A portfolio weighted at 50%.
Production of a 30min intake interview and 2500 word portfolio. This will comprise a critical personal reflection of a student conducted 30min intake interview with an individual sport performer or exerciser (1000 words), and a series of short essays on practical research methods, the accreditation process and counselling skills (1500 words). This will cover learning outcomes 4 and 5.
30 Credits will be gained for an overall pass in this module.
