A COURSEWORK COACHING PORTFOLIO length 2500 words
Students will be required to complete 1 piece of summative assessment:

1. A 2500 word coursework portfolio assessing LOs 1, 2 and 3.
A feature of this assignment is the analysis of coaching senarios

Students will be provided with formative assessment and feedback via:
Seminar sessions will provide the opportunity for students to present their analysis of a situation and
Share knowledge and experiences. A short (500 word) in class practice essay will be matched to assessment criteria in a seminar / workshop session.

A single or selected series of textbooks is unlikely to be sufficient here and access to National
Governing Body websites of various sports is going to be useful, along with many varied other sources. However two particularly useful textbooks are as follows:

Cassidy, T., Jones, R., & Potrac, P. (2004). Understanding sports coaching. The social, cultural and pedagogical foundations of coaching practice. London: Routledge.
Lyle, J. (2002). Sports coaching concepts. A framework for coaches` behaviour. London: Routledge.
Module Indicative Content
The module aims to provide students with an advanced level of knowledge in selected contemporary
issues in sports coaching.

The topics will vary according to topical issues apparent at the time of delivery, but indicative content would currently include: Analysing the coach as a leader including profiling the successful modern day coach; Different approaches to coaching athletes especially at the elite level and analysing contemporary perspectives of the coach-athlete relationship; Ethics in coaching including
child abuse in sport; Developments in coach education strategies including developing the coach as a reflective practitioner; Coaching for long term athlete development; Investigating the involvement of women in coaching.
