Module Indicative Content
The module aims to provide students with an advanced level of knowledge in the area of use and abuse of drugs in sport. The development of the abuse of drugs in sport and the position of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and other governing bodies will be considered. A global perspective is essential to this area of study. The abuse and effectiveness of various selected physiological and pharmacological ergogenic aids will be considered e.g. anabolic steroids, amphetamines, caffeine, blood doping and EPO. The role and effectiveness of doping control procedures will feature throughout the module.
Effective study of this area requires a multi-disciplinary approach including physiological, psychological, sociological, biomechanical and historical perspectives.
This module provides students with an opportunity to develop important life-long skills in an interesting, topical and global scenario.
Module Additional Assessment Details
An EXAM (seen) length 1 HOUR weighted at 50%. A Seminar Presentation weighted at 50%.
Students will be required to complete 2 pieces of summative assessment:
1. A 30 minute seminar presentation (assesses LOs 1 and 2), worth 50% of the overall module mark.
2. A 60 minute timed essay from seen question in examination conditions (assesses LO 3), worth 50% of the overall module mark. Final Assessment.
Additional Assessment Details (including formative feedback / assessment:
Early in the module students will be given to opportunity to undertake a presentation in a group. This will enable then to practice and receive feedback on their presentation skills. Students should reflect on their personal presentation skills and will be given individual feedback by the tutor.
Practice essay sessions will be used to develop the ability to express themselves clearly and to construct well informed arguments.
