Module Learning Strategies
Students will participate in a combination of lectures, labs and independent learning activities designed and delivered through VLE to explore the relevant concepts.
Taught sessions: 72 hours
- 50 hours of lectures covering central content of the module.
- 22 hours of workshops
Independent study: 228 hours
- 150 hours independent research
- 28 hours preparing for group podcast
- 50 hours preparing for submission of written report

- The relationships between young people¿s physical activity fitness and health.
- The importance of promoting physical activity to young people.
- Theoretical models of behaviour change in the promotion of physical activity to young people. Psycho-social approaches, motivation, self-esteem, peer victimisation.
- Physiological, growth and maturation, growth spurts.
- Social aspects, parental influences, TV viewing.
- Environmental aspects, physical activity resources, accessibility, school design, active travel.
- National initiatives for young people's physical activity participation.
- Evidence-based interventions to promote physical activity to young people.
- Good and ethical practice regarding relationships with participants.
- The application and importance of the current young people's physical activity guidelines.
- Health and fitness screening and physical activity assessment.
- Health issues, obesity, bone health, CVD, type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Module Additional Assessment Details
A range of formative and summative assessment methods will be used which are appropriate to the teaching and learning delivery method, mode of attendance and proposed weighting criteria used for this module.
A contextualised and approved assessment strategy and schedule will be published to students.
Summative assessment
Students will be required to complete 2 pieces of summative assessment:
1. A time constrained assignment in the format of a group podcast lasting 15 minutes, worth 40% of the overall module mark, to assess LO: 1.
2. A 3000 word written essay, worth 60% of the overall module mark, to assess LO: 2, 3 and 4.
All learning outcomes are covered by two assessment methods.
Formative feedback will be provided in a variety of forms, including written feedback on proposed titles, outline assignment plans and full drafts and verbal feedback.
