INDICATIVE CONTENT
The Applied Coaching and Teaching Practice module aims to provide students with the knowledge and understanding of the theoretical concepts that lay behind the planning, organisation and delivery of effective teaching and coaching pedagogy. Through engagement with the earlier elements of the module, there will be opportunity to understand the place and functional role of sport, physical activity and physical education more adequately in the lives of children and young people, exploring how techniques and skills are developed for that population. The identification and scrutiny of various pedagogical practices will also ensure that students are enabled to apply these theoretical concepts in the form of a teaching or coaching episode in a specific sport, physical activity or physical education context.
ASSESSMENT DETAILS
1) A 2000-word essay that examines the functional role of sport, physical activity and physical education in the lives of children and young people. In doing so, students will be enabled to scrutinise the ways in which teaching and coaching pedagogy is planned, organised and delivered to develop children and young people and their technique and skill production. Weighted at 50% of the overall module mark assessing LOs 1 and 2.
2) A 20-minute practical teaching / coaching session that focuses on teaching and coaching pedagogy and its implementation. This practical will focus upon effective planning, organisation and delivery to a specific target audience in a sport or physical education context, demonstrating an ability to apply theoretical teaching and coaching pedagogical concepts in practice. Weighted at 50% of the overall module mark assessing LOs 3 and 4.

The applied coaching and teaching practice module provides students a valuable insight to the developments within physical education, physical activity and sports coaching. A module that combines theory and practice to deliver a unique experience to prepare students for employment by covering key industry needs.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
This module incorporates a tutor-lead lecture programme, with a combination of theoretically informed seminars along with coaching and teaching practical sessions that are implemented to apply theoretical concepts. Students will be required to conduct tutor-directed independent study, as well as student-lead enquiry and reading into research around teaching and coaching pedagogy and associated concepts. Student-lead independent study will be required specifically for assessment preparation.
