LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Critically evaluate clinical scenarios and clinical findings, identifying assumptions and incomplete information, to make informed judgements and propose appropriate solutions or a range of neuromusculoskeletal pathologies in sports therapy and rehabilitation
Critical Reasoning & Collaboration
2. Independently manage your professional learning and development, demonstrating initiative, self-reflection, and the transferable skills necessary for effective practice and employment as a graduate sports therapist and rehabilitator.
Personal Development & Entrepreneurship
3. Communicate relevant clinical information, ideas, and decision-making processes effectively to both specialist and non-specialist audiences, adapting your approach to ensure clarity, professionalism, and understanding in sports therapy and rehabilitation contexts.
Communication
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
Presentation: Based on a recent simulated injury assessment, you are expected to deliver a professional case study overview, clearly presenting the patient, and to justify a list of differential diagnoses. You will summarise the objective consultation performed and provide sound clinical reasoning for the working hypotheses. Additionally, you are expected to present a well-supported rationale for the treatment and management strategies implemented.
Portfolio: Throughout the programme, you are expected to engage with the competencies required by the BASRaT. You should ensure that each competency is observed and signed off by academic staff. A portfolio of evidence should be maintained and submitted for review. This element of assessment is pass or fail.
Within this module, students will complete formative assessment tasks designed to support the development of professional knowledge and skills. These tasks will be structured to enable students to demonstrate their developing ability to meet the competencies required by the relevant Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body (PSRB), while receiving feedback that supports progression towards the summative assessments and professional standards expected within the discipline.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module integrates learning from across all modules on the sports therapy and rehabilitation programme, bringing together the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies. Its primary focus is on highly applied, real-world learning, enabling students to experience authentic professional practice in commercial, clinical, and high-performance environments with external placements tailored to an individual’s career aspirations.
Throughout the module, students will consolidate and apply their learning from areas such as anatomy, clinical assessment, exercise prescription and rehabilitation, multidisciplinary practice, and clinical reasoning. The placement-based structure facilitates experiential and problem-based learning, requiring students to engage with realistic cases, respond to real-world challenges, and make evidence-informed decisions in simulated, clinical and sporting environments. Students take responsibility for arranging and managing their placements, ideally across multiple settings, to gain exposure to different services, organisational structures, and inter-professional collaborations. This experience not only broadens their professional networks but also prepares them for the transition to practice as graduate sports therapists and rehabilitators.
Students will develop and demonstrate competencies in communication, ethical practice, record-keeping, risk management, and teamwork. They will apply biopsychosocial, physiological, and biomechanical principles in assessing, planning, delivering, and evaluating interventions, adapting approaches to meet the needs, goals, and limitations of individual clients. Structured reflection and supervisor feedback are embedded throughout, enabling students to critically evaluate their clinical assessments, treatment interventions, decision-making processes, and overall professional development.
While successful completion of this module and the broader programme does not automatically confer professional membership, students will have the opportunity to accrue hours towards the minimum 400 placement hours required for eligibility to apply for full, insured membership of the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators (BASRaT).
By the end of the module, students will be able to operate confidently and autonomously within professional clinical or performance environments, synthesising knowledge and skills from across the programme to deliver safe, effective, and evidence-informed sports therapy practice, while demonstrating reflective, professional, and ethical conduct aligned with their future career aspirations.
WEB DESCRIPTOR
How do you prepare for real-world practice in sports therapy and rehabilitation?
This integrated module gives you hands-on experience in clinical, commercial, and high-performance environments through internal and external placement opportunities. You’ll apply your knowledge of anatomy, clinical assessment, exercise prescription and rehabilitation, and professional practice to real cases, developing your confidence and competence. You’ll also build key skills in communication, ethical decision-making, and reflective practice helping you prepare for a successful transition into your career as a sports therapist and rehabilitator.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
We are committed to providing an engaging, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that develops students’ knowledge, clinical reasoning, and practical skills.
A central feature of our approach is simulation-based learning, which allows students to engage with realistic clinical scenarios in a safe and structured setting. Learning is carefully scaffolded: students begin with peer-to-peer role-play, exploring fundamental concepts, communication, and interpersonal skills; progress to case study simulations, applying evidence-based knowledge to increasingly complex injury scenarios; and ultimately integrate these skills into real-world practice within the University’s commercial clinics at Level 5 and 6. This structured progression ensures a seamless transition from theory to professional application while preparing students for graduate employability.
The module is delivered predominantly face-to-face, combining theoretical understanding with hands-on practical experience to support deeper learning and to develop practical competence. Students refine their manual and technical skills through guided practice, live demonstrations, and independent tasks, consolidating knowledge while building confidence in healthcare and sport settings.
To further support self-directed and reflective learning, students have access to our telehealth and greenscreen facilities, enabling the creation of digital learning resources for revision, skill development, and reflective practice. These activities encourage active engagement, critical thinking, and the integration of evidence-based knowledge into practical decision-making.
