Module Details
Module Indicative Content
In this module students consider the application of psychological techniques to sport settings. First, the development of Applied Sport Psychology as a profession is described. Second, a range of psychological techniques available to practitioners are outlined (e.g., self-talk, relaxation training, imagery). Theoretical and empirical evidence for the effectiveness of these techniques will be considered. Third, students will be required to consider what psychological techniques are most appropriate and how they should best be applied to a range of scenarios (e.g., enhancing confidence in a young performer, helping an elite athlete cope with a career ending injury). The case studies will also require students to develop a more in-depth knowledge of the theoretical background and empirical evidence of psychological techniques as they apply them to specific scenarios (Problem-based learning).
Module Learning Strategies
Students will follow a nine week guided study programme and access support material via Blackboard. Students will be required to access additional support material independently. Understanding of key concepts will be self-assessed via questions posed on Blackboard and tutor feedback will be provided. An understanding of how psychological techniques should be applied will be assessed through selected case studies. Students should engage in on-line discussion sessions and will be required to support discussions with evidence based arguments.

Module Additional Assessment Details
Students will be required to complete 3 pieces of summative assessment:

1. A 1000 word essay (Assess LO 1). This is worth 25% of the module grade, in which students will be required to critically discuss a selected ethical issue that may face an applied sport psychology consultant.

2. One assigned applied sport psychology case study written up in full. The total word limit for this completed case study is 2000 words and is worth 60% of the module grade. This assessment covers LO's 2 and 3. Accompanying submission of the case study students are required submit a selection of five contributions to the module (e.g., formative assessment, on-line discussions). Although not formally marked these contributions are required to pass the module and are included to demonstrate a breadth of engagement in the module.

3. A critical summary of a fellow student's initial proposal for working with a client. The word limit for this assignment is 500 words and it is worth 15% of the module grade. This assessment covers LO's 2, 3 and 4.
