Module Indicative Content
The module develops an understanding of the classification and abuse of drugs in competitive sport. The issue of drug use versus drug abuse will be critically discussed in the context of changing drugs rules and topical incidents of positive drug tests in sport. You will be required to reflect upon and consider your own personal stance on ?drug abuse in sport? and the start and end of the module. Importantly, you will be required to justify your position. The abuse of drugs at various levels of sport, in various countries and sports will be considered. The physiological rationale for drug abuse in various sports will be explored, including the biochemical rationale for their effectiveness. A psychological perspective will focus on anabolic steroids and aggression. Also, the notion of a drug dependency will be considered. Finally, a critical analysis of the effectiveness of drug control measures will be undertaken.
