Module Indicative Content
In this module students consider the application of psychological techniques to sport settings. First, the development of Applied Sport Psychology as a profession is described. Second, a range of psychological techniques available to practitioners are outlined (e.g., self-talk, relaxation training, imagery). Theoretical and empirical evidence for the effectiveness of these techniques will be considered. Third, students will be required to consider what psychological techniques are most appropriate and how they should best be applied to a range of scenarios (e.g., enhancing confidence in a young performer, helping an elite athlete cope with a career ending injury). The case studies will also require students to develop a more in-depth knowledge of the theoretical background and empirical evidence of psychological techniques as they apply them to specific scenarios (Problem-based learning).
Module Learning Strategies
Students will follow a nine week guided study programme and access support material via Blackboard. Students will be required to access additional support material independently. Understanding of key concepts will be self-assessed via questions posed on Blackboard and tutor feedback will be provided. An understanding of how psychological techniques should be applied will be assessed through selected case studies. Students should engage in on-line discussion sessions and will be required to support discussions with evidence based arguments.
Module Additional Assessment Details
Additional Assessment Information:
Students will be required to complete 2 pieces of summative assessment.
1. A 1000 word essay (Assess LOS 1). This is worth 25% of the module grade.
2. Submit a portfolio based on the case studies covered in the module. This will comprise 2 self-selected case studies which have been written up in full. (Assesses LOS 2 & 3). The total word limit for these 2 completed case studies is 3000 words and it is worth 75% of the module grade. In addition, to successfully pass the module, the portfolio must also contain the formative assessment completed for 3 other case studies in which a preliminary intervention was outlined for the client(s) and commented on by the module tutor.
