Module Learning Strategies
This module will be predominantly distributed via the `Blackboard? virtual learning environment.
An optional one-day workshop (based at the University) will be offered to accompany this module which will include; guest speakers who are specialists in Public Health. Discussion groups and case studies will be used to illustrate the topics covered in the module. Students will work through course material delivered through VLE which will guide reading of key texts and papers as well as specifying tasks for completion for formative assessment
Module Indicative Content
The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the concept of health, the causes of illness, disease and disability and the ways in which these can be prevented and controlled. The various levels of intervention, different levels of care, and different strategies in instituting control measures will be discussed. Current public health policies and strategies for the control of common public health problems will be presented. The module will include description of the natural history of common diseases, apply public health principles to screening of populations, health promotion, disease prevention and rehabilitation. Students will apply the knowledge gained in this module to a disease of their choice by describing current public health approaches to disease prevention and control.

Presentation of a case study, 3000 words max: 100%. LOs 1-3
Students will be provided with formative assessment and feedback.
