1. Listening Test (50 minutes, 50%, learning outcome 1)
The listening test will be based on general, business and professional themes similar to those covered in class.

2. Writing Test (45 minutes, 50% learning outcomes 1, 2 )
The writing test will be based on general, business and professional themes similar to those covered in class.

INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module will help you to develop all four basic language skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing, whilst preparing you for further study in the area of your chosen discipline. It will enhance your linguistic skills and subject knowledge through topic-based study in areas of both a general and business specific nature.

1. Listening skills
Grasp much of the content of general and professional discourse.

2. Speaking skills
Participate in oral business communication following, for example, simulated role-play or case-study type scenarios such as discussions, presentations, meetings and negotiations.

3. Reading skills
Scan articles, textbooks, etc. to grasp the main topic of texts, extract relevant information and form judgements about their purpose and usefulness.

4. Writing skills
The module will enable you to communicate in different written styles appropriate for different contexts and to select the most salient and relevant information from your subject field and demonstrate this clearly in writing.

LEARNING STRATEGIES
1. Groups of 12-16 students.
2. Sessions with practical activities, pair work, group work, presentations.
3. Emphasis on active participation rather than passive observation.
4. Extensive directed work using library, internet and journal/newspaper resources.

20 x 2 hour workshop sessions over 2 semesters
