INDICATIVE CONTENT
The purpose of the module is to provide students with an understanding of tourism. The focus of the module will further develop an understanding of the structure of key tourism segments.

Topics covered in the module will be drawn from;
- Factors affecting the demand for tourism
- Theories of tourism:- economic, sociological, geographical, conceptual
- Factors affecting the travel and tourism operations business
- Business and market structures in tourism as they affect the tourism experience
- Tourism infrastructure and sectors of transport, accommodation, hospitality, travel trade

LEARNING STRATEGIES
The learning strategy for this module requires students to commit 150 learning hours (including assessment). Of this, there will be 36 hours of class support (24 hours of formal lectures/large group activity and 12 hours of tutorials) and 114 hours of independent and self directed study.
The strategy will be based around a series of topics that are presented in blocks of appropriate length. Core material will take the form of lectures and referral to other sources such as web sites and official documents as appropriate. This material will be further developed through tutorial exercises and student centred group working.
