This Module will be split in 2 learning Themes; Theme One: Tourism and Theme Two: Events. From this you will be able to apply your knowledge and understanding of the Tourism and Events industries from a global perspective.
Theme One: Tourism
This section of the module will provide students with an understanding of tourism. The focus will be on introducing tourism, identifying the key developments and trends in the industry. The structure of the industry will also be examined, including its principal sectors, and the inter-relationships between them. The module will also explore the role of national governments and tourism organisations.

Introduction to Tourism, definitions and concepts, the tourism system

Tourism supply and demand
Travel intermediaries

Business tourism, definitions and concepts
Management of tourism and impacts
Public sector and tourism

Theme Two: Events
This section of the module will provide students with an introduction to events. This will include an examination of events and festivals including definitions, an outline of the different types of events and the structure of the events industry. The event consumer and the event experience. Issues surrounding the impacts of events and their role in event tourism will also be considered. The module will also introduce business tourism including conferences, exhibitions, corporate travel, meetings and incentives. This will include an examination of demand and supply characteristics, key developments and trends in the industry. The module will also include the planning and organisation of conference and exhibitions. It will introduce aspects of event management and investigate trends and issues in the sector.

ABTA states that ‘one in 10 jobs in the UK prior to the pandemic were connected to the industry’, this should give you some idea of how the Global Travel, Tourism and Events industry supports the UK economy and how BIG the industry is today.

Digital storytelling involves integrating multimedia (images, text, video, audio, etc.) and narrative to produce immersive stories that connect with the viewer.

You have been tasked to create a marketing video promoting a Event or a Tourist Destination to a ‘global’ marketplace. As a group you will decide on the topic / theme for your marketing campaign.
In groups, you are required to complete a set of marketing and promotional material for a campaign of your choice, exploring concepts relevant to tourism and events.
This will include two videos, one 3-minute video and a 30-second video. Additionally, your group will be required to create a visual document which will be presented as a 1 page marketing poster for your promotional campaign. You will showcase all your material to the rest of the group, which will be followed up by discussions – evidence to be submitted for assessment:

Learning Strategies
The module will be delivered on site and the students will attend a weekly lecture and workshops. Lectures will be researched informed and industry relevant. Lecture materials and additional reading, including a key text written by the module leader will be available on-line via blackboard.
Some workshops will be dedicated towards the assessments.
In addition to the subject and topics that are examined throughout the module, attention will be placed on developing a range of professional skills linked to the industry i.e. within the Tourism and Events Industry. Concepts will be illustrated using cases and examples.
This module is designed to further develop skills, techniques, and approaches and to seek appropriate solutions based on reasoning and analysis.
The module will draw upon a mixture of activities including lectures, web-based activities, case study analysis, relevant videos and in-class discussions, individual and group problem solving and self-directed learning.
