Module Additional Assessment Details
Formative:
Individual seminar presentation to the group including an outline of the planned assessment, which could include context, tools, underpinning philosophy and conduct, and rationales.
Summative:
Undertake the mental health assessment of a client in your own area of practice. Produce a written analysis of that assessment. The analysis should include details of the philosophy, methods and tool/s used and why as well as some comparison of models to demonstrate the benefits of the one selected for use. It must be demonstrated that the service user (and possibly others) remained central to the process.
Module Special Admissions Requirements
Evidence of level 2 study or appropriate and sufficient experiential learning. Students must be clinically based and have a professional qualification

Comprehensive mental health assessment - utilising different models and considering evidence based practice
Assessment as a therapeutic intervention including motivational interviewing and brief interventions
Single assessment and multi professional, multi agency working
Personal and professional philosophy, including ethical and legal standing
The principles of health assessment, interviewing and history taking to form a nursing diagnosis.
Contextual issues and holistic practice in evaluating health - selecting the right approach
User and carer involvement, negotiation, consent and issues of choice for service users
Assessment schedules and rating scales
The physical health needs of mental health clients
Mental health promotion and psycho education
Documentation.
Module Learning Strategies
The module requires participation from students to relate and utilise elements of mental health assessment relevant to the students' own clinical area of work. The module is divided into independent learning 80% and contact time 20%. A range of strategies will be used during the contact time including:
Group work and discussion (40%)
Role-play with discussion and feedback (10%)
Lectures (40%)
Individual and group tutorials (10%)
The 123 hours of independent study will be organised by the student. This independent study will include reading, e learning and preparation of the assignment
