Students should work in an area where they are working with young people and provision of sexual health advice is part of the professional role.
Module Additional Assessment Details
Summative Assessment a 3,500 word written assignment with 100% weighting which will meet all the learning outcomes
Utilising a case study the student will critically reflect on personal communication skills and using new knowledge and skills gained demonstrate how appropriate communication skills can impact on young people's sexual health

Formative feedback will be given on students draft work to ensure academic level is obtained
Module Indicative Content
The module will include instruction on how to create a safe learning environment for young people and examine the role of group agreements. The role of negotiating and communication skills will also be examined, incorporating how such skills can impact on young people's sexual health, including those who are particularly vulnerable to sexual ill-health.
The knowledge will be delivered via lectures over three themed study days which could also be accessed by students who only wish to gain the knowledge delivered on those days.
Creating a Safe Learning Environment Day will examine the student's interpretation of what constitutes a safe learning environment for discussing sexual health issues and how this compares with the evidence. The day will also look at group agreements and how they can impact on creating a safe learning environment. Considering the key components of an appropriate group agreement the students will create an appropriate Group agreement for their own workplace.
Negotiating and Communication Skills Day will explore the difference and definitions of negotiating and communication skills and how they differ when working with young people. Students will examine the key components of appropriate negotiating and communication skills in order to deliver sexual health advice to young people. Using scenarios from the students own workplace activities will be used to examine how communication impacts on their role. Communication Theories such interpersonal models will be introduced and activities will be used for students to use such theories to identify their own communication style.
Communicating with Vulnerable People Day will identify who are vulnerable to sexual ill-health in society. The needs of young people such as; those leaving care, young offenders, individuals with learning difficulties or disabilities, also those who have mental health and emotional issues. Issues impacting on survivors of abuse; sexual, physical and emotional will also be examined to determine how negotiating and communication skills can impact on their sexual health. Students will be asked to look at developing appropriate negotiating and communication strategies to meet the needs of vulnerable young people in their workplace.
Study skills will also be discussed at the end of each study day for those who wish to take the accreditation.
