Module Additional Assessment Details
Reflective paper 3000 words examining the specific health and social care need of an individual living with HIV/AIDS identifying a particular event to reflect on making recommendations for future practice (75% weighting) (contributes to meeting LO's 1, 2, 3 and 4)
Case Study 1000 words demonstrating the management of an individual living with HIV from either a health or social care perspective (25% weighting) (contributes to meeting LO 2)
both elements off assessment must be passed
Additional Assessment Details (including formative feedback / assessment:
10 minute presentation with 15 minutes feedback from tutors and peers on the chosen topic of the Case Study
Module Indicative Content
HIV is still a life threatening illness with new infections of HIV continuing to grow. Advances in drug therapies have insured that people with HIV are living longer however to maintain this benefit it is essential that health and social care practitioners respond with the knowledge and skills to provide appropriate care supported by clinical guidelines and standards.
This module will develop the student's knowledge and understanding of the complex health and social care needs of people infected and affected by HIV, including the legal and ethical aspects of HIV in the United Kingdom.
The module will examine the currently available anti retroviral drug therapies and explore specific issues related to the management of people undertaking such regimes for example adherence and drug resistance.
It will review current Health Promotion Strategies for the individual and the Community to develop appropriate health enhancing interventions.
The module will review and evaluate current partnerships working arrangements by focusing in on the provision of Clinical Networks and Multi disciplinary working strategies in the student's area of work
The content of the module will include the following:
Epidemiology
Virology
Immunology
Pathogenesis of HIV disease
Clinical picture (including serological monitoring adult and mental health problems)
Transmission, health promotion.
Treatments - HAART/ specific to opportunistic infections
Working with vulnerable groups
HIV cultural issues
Nursing care & support across the disease spectrum, including HIV related bereavement
Impact of Professional Practitioners support
