Module Indicative Content
Mental health aspects of service development are integral to all members of the multi professional team supporting older people with mental health needs; the content of this module will reflect the diversity of professionals who work with the client group. The purpose of this module is to give the student an opportunity to reflect on the service currently delivered to older people with mental health needs and their families and develop strategies to bring about service improvement through the development and application of skills in change management and service redesign.
The module will commence with a historical overview of older people's mental health services, review relevant government policy and guidance and consider their implications for implementation. It will explore the experience and aspirations of older people with mental health problems and also those of their family carers and consider approaches to ensure that those perspectives are central to service development.
Potential models of support, care and intervention within specialist secondary services, the housing and social care sectors, primary care and the interface with general acute care will be explored. Included will be opportunity to introduce different models of support under development within the UK to respond to the policy agenda (e.g. direct payment, single assessment, memory clinics and mental health components of intermediate care). There will also be opportunity to reflect on international perspectives.
The theories and skills of change management and service redesign will be developed and developed and applied to services known to the students. All students will be required to explore models of organisational change and service redesign to develop proposals to bring about change within their own organisation or practice setting.
