Module Indicative Content
This module will ensure that those practitioners with a special interest in mental health will be equipped with the essential knowledge and skills to be capable of assessing, diagnosing and managing specific clinical conditions and mental health needs of individuals of any age in the context of their family and other relationships. This will require practitioners to synthesise a range of information sources in order to formulate decisions and make conclusions regarding treatment and care management plans.
This module is a 3 day residential module - to cover the depth and range of subject content and to include the VIVA presentation examinations demanded by the service design module assignment brief.
The indicative content will include:
Reference to specific mental health conditions: anxiety, depression, psychosis and bipolar disease.
Recognition and application of diagnostic criteria to such conditions.
Recognition and impact of the presence of co-morbidity when present.
Assessment and management strategies/options for patients with medically unexplained symptoms.
Assessment strategies in order to assess the severity and impact of the condition and be able to plan appropriate management.
Multidisciplinary team working, leadership and enablement and care management strategies (CPA).
Monitoring the progress of a condition in order to ascertain the effectiveness, or otherwise, of treatment.
Existing biomedical and social models basis of these conditions; severe and enduring mental illness.
Current policy and legislation.
Contemporary treatment and interventions.
The concepts of those who are `difficult to treat' or `treatment-resistant'.
Recovery based approaches to these conditions; Social inclusion
The impact of culture and ethnicity in presentations of physical and psychological conditions.
Relevant risk issues, including risk to self and others.
Interpersonal qualities and skills to effect recovery based assessments and management plans.
Effective interpersonal skills, values and beliefs.
Expert patient programmes - User involvement and working effectively with the emotional, mental health needs of vulnerable people and groups.

HEALTH HISTORY REPORT achieving learning outcomes 1,2,3,4
Additional Assessment Details:
The health history report will relate to a patient of the student's choice, in which the student will demonstrate an understanding and critical awareness of the assessment, diagnostic and recovery based care management process (by critically analysing relevant theory and concepts to support practical application).
Formative Assessment: Students will be provided with the opportunity for formative feedback informally throughout the module and via individual tutorial support feedback.
