83 hours direct contact which includes lectures, workshops and tutorials over 24 weeks (60 hours lectures and 23 workshops and tutorials)

Independent Study Hours: (517)
180 self directed study (7.5 hours per week over 24 weeks)
337 hours supervised clinical practice with nominated mentor (with an additional 112.5 hours of clinical practice to enable the required level of competence to be met). Which equates to 18.75 hours (2.5 days) per week for 24 weeks.
Module Special Admissions Requirements
Candidates should a qualified nurse, midwife or RSCN. Candidates must have completed Foundation 1 and 2 or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skill of neonatal special care and critical care

Module Additional Assessment Details
Summative Assessment:
- Achievement of clinical competencies PASS/FAIL (contributes to meeting LO's 1, 2, 3 & 5)
- Completion of MCQs PASS/FAIL - pass rate is 80% (contributes to meeting LO's 2 & 4)
- Reflective essay on a critical incident (positive or negative) around an aspect of neonatal intensive care: 4000 words. (contributes to meeting LO's 2, 3, 4 and 5)
- OSCE - care of the 24 week critically ill neonate within 24 hours of birth ( at week 13 of programme) PASS/FAIL (contributes to meeting LO's 1 & 2)

All elements of assessment must be passed in order to pass the module

Formative feedback:-
All students will have the opportunity to undertake mock MCQ papers and a mock OCSE and receive formative feedback following this. In addition, all candidates will have a clinical mentor who will meet regularly with the student to discuss progress

Module Indicative Content
This module will further develop students¿ knowledge and skills required to enable them to independently assess, manage and evaluate the care of the critically ill neonate. A key aspect will be the recognition of deterioration in physical status and demonstrating clinical competence in implementing appropriate therapeutic interventions. This will include:
- Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology
- Therapeutic interventions
- Cooling therapy
- Respiratory and airway management and including invasive ventilation
- cardiovascular function, haemodynamic stability
- Skin assessment and care
- Developmental care
- Jaundice
- Pain, pharmacology, non pharmacology and assessment tools
- Care, management and treatment of sepsis
- Legal and ethical issues in neonatal intensive care
- End of life care
- Transfer of the critically ill neonate
- management of the neonatal unit
- communication
- multi disciplinary team
