Module Details
Module Indicative Content
Abobe/Macromedia's Flash software, and swf file format is becoming a ubiquitous part of online design. It is developing a range of ways of handing dynamic-data transfer which allows the user to see and handle input and receive output in palatable and useful ways, which communicate using visuals, diagrams and interaction. Flash is also spreading its compass to allow designs to cross platforms easily and consistently

The final work will demonstrate practical understanding of online data-driven Flash design used in conjunction with appropriate digital illustration/layout techniques for on-screen cross-platform design, and your technical control of the medium and its elements.

You will work on a log/folder of development work, annotating your progress in:
- De-constructing and analysing current examples of onscreen designs
- Consistant structural layout
- Good knowledge and skills in Flash and its online data uploads and enquiries

Module Learning Strategies
The module is based on a set of tutorials and seminars
1) discussing and producing examples of Flash data-driven screens or pages
2) Attending and participating in workshops and seminars covering, current examples of Flash data-driven screens or pages
3) Undertaking theoretical study of interactive narrative in self managed research on games and web-based interaction
4) Developing skills in appropriate software through directed learning and practice.

Module Resources
Access to bookable studio space and lecture/seminar room with blackout and digital presentation hardware. Access to digital storage. Computer workshop facilities and appropriate hardware and software. Slide Library. Specialist skills 'modulettes' will be assigned to this module.
Module Texts
Kerman P. Macromedia Flash MX 2004 for Rich Internet Applications: New Riders Press 2003 ISBN: 0735713669

Green, T.and Brown, C. Macromedia Flash 8 : Rich Application Development; Macromedia Press 2006 ISBN: 0321394968

You will be expected to take advantage of the extensive library facilities available within the University, keeping abreast of current developments through appropriate periodicals and software manuals

Module Additional Assessment Details
Coursework is made up of aggregated components using negotiated briefs and content to cover learning outcomes 1-4; a final assessment grade will take an holistic view of the student's achievements across all components.

You will be asked to produce a folder or log of rough work for print and screen which develops online communication mediated through Adobe Macromedia Flash [Learning Outcome 1-4]

Your log-files or folder (digital and printed) will contain
- Digital captures of examples (your own and any influences) - annotated for methods of construction and for methods of re-engineering
- Captures of work in progress - with technical construction notes and analysis/reflection for the next iteration of the idea
- Captures of platform-transfer, using the same design and content across two or more platforms

You will also produce examples of cross-platform application of those ideas and layouts which demonstrate a good understanding of the strengths and constraints of cross-platform functionality [Learning Outcome 1-4]

You will make a formal presentation which demonstrates and justifies your completed project work [Learning Outcome 1-4]
