Module Additional Assessment Details
The assessment strategy for this module involves formative and summative methods.
The summative assessments for this module include:
- Completion of clinical competencies,(weighted at 0%) which will be marked as either a `Pass or Fail', (assessing all LO's)
- Completion of a multiple choice question examination (MCQ). A pass mark of 80% is required. The MCQ is weighted as 20% of the total module mark, (assessing LO's 1 and 2)
- Completion of a 60 minute written examination. A pass mark of 40% is required. This is weighted as 40% of the total module mark (assessing LO 2)
- Completion of a 4,000 word reflective essay related to an aspect of neonatal critical care. The essay is weighted at 40% of the total module mark, (assessing LO's 2, 3 and 5)
- Undertake an Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), focussing on a newborn neonate requiring specialist care. The OSCE will be undertaken at week 13 of programme. The OSCE (weighted at 0%) will be marked as either a `Pass or Fail', (assessing LO's 1 and 2)
All elements of the summative assessments must be passed in order to successfully complete the module.
Formative assessment will be provided to all students by means of feedback during the taught

Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology
Respiratory and airway management and including invasive ventilation
Therapeutic interventions
Skin assessment and care
Cardiovascular function and haemodynamic stability
Developmental care
The management of jaundice
Management of the neonatal unit
Professional responsibilities and accountability
Pain management, including assessment tools, pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions
Legal and ethical issues in neonatal intensive care
Care, management and treatment of sepsis
Thermal care
End of life care
Communication and multidisciplinary team working
Transfer of the critically ill neonate
